Why they were chosen

For the first time the Municipality gave the throne to a couple: on 21 December 2017 it announced that the King and Queen would be played by 'two genuine carnival-goers', Christakis and Zina Machalekkidi, 'as a token of appreciation for their long-standing contribution to the Carnival'. The couple have paraded since 1987 – first entry 'The 1996 Olympics in Greece' – and stand out for their excellent constructions, beautiful costumes and imaginative choreographies.
